Genevieve: Our new Japanese style bath is lovely. For those of you who aren’t familiar ourbath004.jpgwith Japanese bathing customs, you first take a shower and wash yourself off really well, and then hop into a deep hot bath. The bathtub has computerized settings for exact temp, water level, warm up, you name it.

You can’t program it to shoot electic waves through the water though (don’t laugh, they actually have these baths in sentos (Japanese public bath houses). When I lived in Kyoto, I sat in one and let’s just say that I preferred the aromatherapy bath across the room.

Genevieve: The second meal I made that we all really enjoyed, was temaki zushi (sushi hand rolls). This is fairly simple to make, as all you have to do is prepare the sushi rice and then lay out all the ingredients on a plate. It’s immensely satisfying though and we all have fun making them. Kenji particularly loves ikura (salmon egg) rolls.

Genevieve: Japanese food is delicious. Unfortunately, I’m not totally familiar with how to prepare it at home. Plus all the directions are in Japanese, which although I can read some, making sense of it can sometimes be near to impossible. But with that said, I’ve managed to make a few meals that came out well. The first was Hiyashi chuka, a cold noodle dish topped with fresh cucumber, egg, crab meat, sprouts, and ginger. The Japanese usually include ham, but we prefer the crab.

Genevieve: Well the petting zoo was closed, but the boats were available so we took full advantage and paddled our way around a pond filled with turtles and koi. I don’t think we were missing much at the petting zoo anyways; i saw a few forlorn looking rabbits, and some sad looking dogs.
Afterwards we walked to a nearby discount dept store and ate ramen and yaki soba (friend Japanese noodles) for lunch. We decided to buy Kenji a futon too, as he decided that he no longer liked sleeping in a crib. I guess he’s growing up!

Genevieve: This is from when my cousin Shinichiro was visiting our apartment. He’s very funny and Kenji loves him.

Shinichiro can speak english fairly well, although their preferred form of communication is through funny noises and faces.

Genevieve: Well, we arrived a little over 2 weeks ago on September 13th. And I’m just now getting around to setting up this blog-thing-a-majig. I hope it’s a good way to record my thoughts and daily activities, along with letting others know what we’re up to if they’re interested.
I can’t promise that the content will be exciting–I guess that will depend on our lives.
